Electrification process

Electrification process in cars drives powder metallurgy

There is a clear global trend, at least in megacities, towards electric powertrain in order to move emissions out of the city and centralize them in the electric power station.

New technical challenges for electric motors / electric machines:
Besides batteries and efficient power electronics, electric motors and electrical machines are the crucial components in electric cars. The technical requirements for these components increase significantly in terms of efficiency, power density and  reduction of the required space.

Soft magnetic components - core elements for electrical motors:
For a guidance of the magnetic field in electric machines and power electronics, iron based soft magnetic components are commonly used. They influence the design and the efficiency of those components substantially. In advanced applications laminated sheet metals cannot fulfill the requirements:
Typically laminated sheet metals are used as soft magnetic components. Higher eddy current losses, 2 D-flux and restrictions in the design limit the use of sheet metals in advanced applications

Powder Metallurgy – Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) for advanced applications:
Soft magnetic composites (SMC) show significant advantages in higher frequency levels. The isotropic properties of SMC open up for 3 D–design solutions in high power applications. With powder metallurgy the electrical motors as well as reactors for power electronics can reach a higher power densities and reduced production cost at the same time.
