A typical roller type one-way clutch (OWC) consists primarily of races (outer and inner) and rollers. In addition, self energizing springs act on the rollers to ensure engagement with the races. Features (cam surfaces) on one of the races (outer or inner) allow for the wedging of the rollers against the races to achieve lock-up.

The fundamental operating principle of one-way clutches is to prevent rotation in one direction and to permit freewheel in the reverse direction. Roller OWCs are friction dependent devices that wedge a loading element between concentric races and thereby transmit a torsional load.

Critical requirements for one way clutches are high contact fatigue resistance at the roller contact and high tensile strength
